THL Ladies MENTORING PROGRAM
The goal of this event is to teach ladies the fundamentals of hunting. We were all taught these skills by others and understand the importance of paying it forward.
It's is not a requirement of the event but if you have interest in learning to become a guide or mentor we are here to help you! We would love for you to participate and mentor future events.
EVENT DETAILS
LOCATION
Timber Hills Lake Ranch
1369 Valley Rd, Mapleton, KS 66754-9459
You will drive up to the entrance that has an electronic gate. You will need to push the button to open the gate to enter. It will automatically close behind you-make sure it does start to close before you drive away. THERE ARE ANIMALS THAT NEED TO REMAIN GATED. Follow the road up to the main lodge. It is the biggest building facing the lake. You'll see a row of cabins to your left, right before the main lodge. Please park by the cabins.
ARRIVAL
Please arrive between 10am - 1:00PM at the lodge. There you will be greeted to sign waivers and receive your cabin number. You will then head to your cabin to unload your car. You will need to grab your hunting gear, hunting equipment (rifle or archery), throw on your warm gear, and then head back to the lodge. If you are running late or no longer attending, PLEASE CONTACT US immediately.
LODGING
We will share cabins over the weekend. Each cabin sleeps 3 ladies. You will be pointed to your assigned cabins when you arrive. If you have any sleep sensitivities, please plan in advance for yourself. This may include a sleep mask, ear plugs, etc. At the end of your stay, we ask that you tear down your bedding and towels so they can get moved to the laundry efforts. PLEASE keep wet/muddy shoes on a towel or placed outside on the deck. We want to try to avoid tracking mud and junk inside the cabins.
MEALS
Friday: Dinner
Saturday: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
GUIDE / MENTOR
Every huntress will be paired with a Mentor to guide you on your journey from start to finish.
HUNTING LICENSE / TAGS-
If you have not completed your required hunters education course, it is needed for your hunting licenses. Here are a couple of options for your consideration.
Hunter / Education / Services / KDWP - KDWP
Hunter Education | Missouri Department of Conservation
IF you have NOT completed Hunters Safety you need to complete the required APPRENTICE Application.
You will be responsible for obtaining your hunters license and an antlerless deer tag. We encourage you to pursue them the day of, but before you arrive. Downloading the GoOutoorsKS app in advance and saving your digital licenses are also encouraged. This keeps everything in one place and allows for digital check in of your harvest. For our out-of-state ladies, there will be a discounted antlerless deer tag starting the first week of January (this is still in addition to a KS hunting license).
HARVEST and PROCESSING
Timber Hills has a great group of volunteer mentors ready to teach you and support the processing phase of your harvest. Please bring gallon-size ziploc bags and a large cooler for your harvest. If you do not wish to process your doe at Timber Hills, there are two processors in the area. You will be responsible for transportation and fees associated with the processor if you go that route.
WEATHER
It's winter, prepare for the temps. We will hunt in all conditions unless unsafe conditions. Timber Hills has a variety of blind styles and will put us in stands that fit the weather.
It is easy to take layers off to cool down vs not having enough layers on to keep warm. Don't forget your fingers, toes, nose, and ears. Hot hands work great in your pockets and in between your socks. Please shake and activate them before you get to your stand. Taking a heated drink, soup, broth, and coffee tea helps too. There is a microwave and coffee pot in your cabins as well as the main lodge.
BORROWING A RIFLE
If you are borrowing a rifle from Timber Hills, please plan to work with MelIssa B to purchase the appropriate ammunition from them. They will have the ammo that matches the rifle you are borrowing.
HUNTERS TIPS
Yes, Timber Hills is a privately owned outfitter, but you are required to follow hunting guidelines and wear hunters orange when traveling to your blind, in the blind, down from the blind, back to the lodge. Safety first. This may include an orange hat or beanie and orange vest. Walmart, Amazon, etc have low-cost options.
We ask that you think and prepare as hunters this weekend. Scent-free is recommended. The clothing you wear to hunt in should be washed and dried with scent-free products. Keep them separated from your daily clothing. Consider scent-free products like deodorant. No body spray, perfume, oils, or scented lotion, please. Even think down to your shampoo and conditioner.
SAFETY FIRST!
When you are transporting and traveling to your hunting stand/blind, communicate with your mentor on how they want your rifle or bows stored/placed during transportation. ALL rifles and magazines are to be unloaded with the safety on at ALL times. The only time you will load and make ready will be under the guidance of a mentor either at the range or in your blind. For the ladies hunting independently, we ask that you follow the same expectations for safe handling and transportation.
PHONE COVERAGE and Wifi-
Phone coverage can be spotty around the area and onsite. There is WIFI at the main lod
AFTER THE HUNT RECOMENDATIONS
The main lodge always has something playing on the tv. Most gather and spend time chatting away. You can explore the property, bird watch, help other ladies with their processing...catch up on sleep! Naps are pretty solid after a long day of work. You do YOU! We want you to enjoy the weekend however you see fit for yourself.
If the waters are not iced over you are welcome to fish. Good temps for trout. Bring your fishing gear or borrow a pole for Timber Hills.ge. Recommend downloading your movies and audiobooks in advance.
